Animal Control Officer
Marshall County Animal Control
This is responsible animal control work assisting with all aspects of domesticated dogs, cats and/or non-exotic animal apprehension, control, and placement for Marshall County. Activities associated with the job include the collection of stray and/or abandoned domesticated dogs, cats and/or non-exotic animals, transporting them to the animal shelter or other appropriate location and assisting with proper intake procedures. Additional responsibilities include educating the public about rabies control and regulations governing animals and assisting certified animal shelter personnel with intake and control activities when necessary. Job responsibilities require good interpersonal, organizational and decision making skills, considerable experience in animal control activities and working with animals, thorough knowledge of all state regulations and local ordinances governing the control, care and treatment of animals, ability to consistently adhere to established operational policies and procedures and sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions. Job performance is evaluated by the County Mayor through review of the effectiveness of animal control activities, ability to effectively interact with the public, animal shelter staff and volunteers, knowledge of state regulations and local ordinances governing animal control activities, ability to interact effectively with the public and efficient use of departmental equipment and funding.
Necessary Requirements of Work
Graduation from an accredited high school; considerable experience working with animals; law enforcement training or experience; ability to interact appropriately with local officials and the public; thorough knowledge of local ordinances pertaining to the apprehension and control of both domesticated and non-domesticated animals; good interpersonal, organizational and decision-making skills; sufficient strength and agility to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

- Assists with patrolling neighborhoods and responding to calls to apprehend stray and/or abandoned animals and transporting them to the animal shelter or other appropriate locations.
- Investigates allegations of animal cruelty, neglect and/or abandonment and notifies law enforcement personnel when necessary.
- Assists with trapping a variety of invasive small animals and rodents.
- Performs a variety of administrative duties such as logging calls, preparing surrender forms, bite reports, etc.
- Provides training to law enforcement personnel on animal related laws and the proper handling of animals and/or animal related complaints.
- Responds to complaints and/or emergency situations in accordance with the current Marshall County Animal Control Policy and Procedures Manual and effectively mediates disputes involving citizens regarding animals.

- Thorough knowledge of state statutes and regulations regarding the care and treatment of animals and animal control activities.
- Thorough knowledge of the statutes, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to animal control, adoption, and disposal for Marshall County.
- Thorough knowledge of animal handling and apprehension techniques, animal behavior and animal health.
- Possession of a valid Driver’s License and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle insurance rates.
- Current certification in Pepper Spray and Taser.
